ES Summer Youth Program

Funded by Nissan North America and the City of Los Angeles Office of Community Beautification, the Summer Youth Program is a seasonal program overseen by KYCC’s Environmental Services unit. The Summer Youth Program is dedicated to beautifying Koreatown through street cleaning, graffiti removal, and tree planting.

Since its establishment in 2012, the Summer Youth Program has not only made Koreatown a more beautiful and environmentally-friendly neighborhood but has also offered over 70 paid summer positions for youth in the city of Los Angeles.

Through the program, Los Angeles youth, ages 15 to 24, will have the opportunity to learn more about KYCC’s Environmental Services programs, such as tree planting, tree maintenance, community engagement and outreach, event planning and preparation, graffiti removal and abatement, and street cleaning activations.

Each year, the youth split up into two separate groups of Youth Environmental Stewards, who are led by two Summer Youth Supervisors, who are also responsible for driving the ES trucks. All participating youth are offered professional development days throughout the term that have included resumé-building workshops, tree biology training, and Catalina Island environmental learning trips in the past.

“If we didn’t have our summer youth, we wouldn’t be able to do the work that we do,” says Community Engagement Coordinator Will Levegood. “They really give the office the capacity to serve our mission and we look forward to working with them every single year.” How to get involved:
