In honor of National Volunteer Appreciation week on April 7 through April 13,  KYCC highlighted a few of the volunteers who commit their time and energy to supporting KYCC’s mission. 

 

First, we wanted to recognize Woojin Cho for his contributions to KYCC and the Koreatown community.  Woojin is an intern in both the Environmental Services and Development units and spends 32 hours a week here.  Woojin is part of a scholarship program between the Korean and US governments that allows participants to explore life and culture in the United States through immersion and travel.  When asked what made him join the program, Woojin shared, “Before I get a real job, I wanted an opportunity to learn what I might want to do, and I also wanted to experience a different culture.  I think since the US has a big difference with Korean culture, it will help me to figure out who I want to be.”  Although being away from home for so long leaves Woojin homesick at times, the welcoming and kind KYCC staff has made the transition easier, he remarked.  When Woojin finishes his 6-month term at KYCC in mid-May, he plans to travel to Las Vegas and see the rest of the U.S. by plane, train and auto for three weeks. 

KYCC’s Communications and Development Internship Program has trained over 30 students in the fundamentals of nonprofit administration. Katherine Kim, KYCC’s Communications Editor shares, “Woojin’s academic background in sports marketing was critical during our partnership with the Los Angeles Clippers during our Korean Heritage Night at the Staples Center. He has also implemented and analyzed analytics across our social media platforms, created infographics for new programs and translated important documents to Korean to reach our Korean-speaking clientele. I am grateful for his time and enthusiasm, and hope more international interns will consider this program. I will be sad to see him return to Korea!”
