Unwind Your Mind Bringing Youth Together for Change
On April 11, KYCC hosted its 5th Annual Unwind Your Mind Youth Summit at the UCLA Labor Center in MacArthur Park. This annual summit is put on by multiple KYCC youth-serving programs, this year bringing together our Clinical Services, Koreatown Storytelling Program, Prevention Education, Recovery Services, and Youth Services for a collaborative event.

Each year, the event welcomes high school youth from our community to explore meaningful topics, build new skills, and connect with resources that support their personal and academic growth. This year’s keynote speaker for Unwind Your Mind, was local Los Angeles based artist, Jackie Hernandez, also known as Las Chicas Peligrosas. Jackie shared about how culture and community inspires her work, growing up in the Pico Union neighborhood, and how she utilizes various artforms to bring stories to life.

Unwind Your Mind provided a variety of workshops for 60 high school attendees, ranging from learning about the importance of green spaces in our neighborhoods and how to handle peer pressure, to financial literacy, budgeting, and practicing self care through a fun drum circle led by our partners at Rhythm and Truth.

“It was great to see students in our community gather to learn and grow together,” says Sarah Won, KYCC’s Clinical Services Coordinator. “The energy was great, all the attendees were very engaged, and there were lots of fun giveaways and delicious food!” The youth in attendance were surveyed following the event, with 94% of students reporting that they enjoyed their time at the summit.

Thank you to all of our youth and partners who helped make this event a success. A special thank you to Substance Abuse Prevention and Control (SAPC), UCLA Labor Center, Door Dash, Panda Express, Rhythm and Truth, Las Chicas Peligrosas, and Hanmi Bank.
