On May 3, KYCC Prevention Education hosted its 8th Annual Flores de Mayo event at the Garden Suite Hotel to commemorate our Prevention Education’s Prevention Community Council (PCC), which currently has a membership of over 200 community members, that consists of several parent groups who help reduce substance abuse in youth ages 12 through 20 years old in Koreatown, Pico-Union, and Westlake. Parent representatives from these groups also help guide prevention efforts and speak on behalf of the communities they reside in.

Since 2017, Flores de Mayo has been celebrated annually to promote an alcohol-free environment, challenging the cultural tradition that parties and gatherings can only be enjoyed with alcoholic beverages. This event also celebrates and recognizes parents for their participation in KYCC’s programs and their contributions to substance prevention education efforts.

Flores de Mayo aims to create a safe and inclusive environment where parents and community members from the Prevention Community Council (PCC) can gather to enjoy food, fun, special speakers, and awards, highlighting the importance of substance prevention education and celebrating the invaluable contributions of our community members.

The event was a tremendous success, with notable attendance from Councilwoman Heather Hutt, Field Representative Eric Moon from the Office of Assemblymember Miguel Santiago, Field Deputy Gabby Sidhu from the Office of U.S. Representative Jimmy Gomez, and Field and Mobility Deputy Loue Leiva from the Office of Councilwoman Eunisses Hernandez, who all honored our PCC leadership team and other distinguished PCC members with commemorative certificates.

The presence of these esteemed guests underscored the significance of the event and the community’s collective commitment to creating a supportive and alcohol-free environment.

“Big applause to the organizers for creating such a beautiful event, and congratulations to KYCC Prevention Education Unit for delivering an exceptional experience. Everything was impeccably organized!,” noted one Prevention Community Council parent.

A huge thank you to all of our community event partners and special guests for the continuous support.
