If you are a low-income taxpayer who needs assistance in resolving an issue with the IRS or needs help understanding your responsibilities but cannot afford representation you may qualify for free help from our Low income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC).

If any of the letters you received from IRS indicates one of these terms, you can contact us to see if we can provide free assistance:
- Setting up a Payment Plan
- Audits and Examinations
- Wage and ID Verifications
- Shared Responsibility Reconciliations
Further understand what to do with your IRS notice or letter by taking the steps recommended by the IRS and learning more about the specific notice you received by searching up the notice number through Taxpayer Advocate Services, an independent IRS organization.

Our staff will help determine your eligibility and see if we can help your case. Please keep in mind that we may not be able to assist depending on the nature and complexity of the issue at hand.

KYCC’s LITC works with volunteer attorneys to assist with cases. Often, there is more demand than availability. You may be assigned to a waiting list until a qualified volunteer can take on a case.

KYCC’s LITC receives funding from the IRS. The clinic, its employees, and volunteers are not affiliated with the IRS. Please keep in mind that in some cases, providing consultation does not mean we legally represent our clients.

Resources

Can LITC also help me prepare tax returns?

No, LITC does not prepare tax returns as we specialize in resolving issues with the IRS. However, KYCC offers a separate tax preparation service for those who are eligible.
I have over $50,000 in debt. Can you still help me resolve an issue with the IRS?

Depending on the complexity of the matter, we may only be able to address any questions taxpayers may have in addressing their tax issues. If possible, we may be able to provide legal advice, but not representation.
Will I be legally represented in my case if I seek help from KYCC?

Legal representation is determined on a case-by-case basis, where we take into account income, tax controversy amounts, as well as complexity of tax issues with the Internal Revenue Service. Representation is not guaranteed. In the case we cannot help you, you can try searching for and visiting other LITCs to see if they can.
