On Wednesday, Aug.14, 2019, KYCC held the Grand Opening of their newest program—Recovery Services. KYCC’s Recovery Services is the first state-certified outpatient substance use disorder clinic in Koreatown and will provide culturally and linguistically competent outpatient treatment for people facing drug and alcohol problems. Funded by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, Substance Abuse Prevention and Control, services will be available to youth and adults ages 12 and up, men and women. Treatment is individualized according to each person’s needs and preferences toward successful long-term recovery.
Shortly after a brief press conference and a ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate the opening of our new outpatient drug treatment clinic, KYCC hosted a Community Open House of KYCC’s Clinical Services. Community members, partner organizations and KYCC staff stopped by and toured the newly expanded offices of Clinical Services, and the newly opened Recovery Services on the fourth floor of 3727 W. 6th St., Los Angeles, CA 90020.
“KYCC has always addressed substance use as part of our comprehensive mental health program,” states Nayon Kang, LCSW, Director of Children and Family Services. “But we have long recognized the need in the Koreatown community for recovery services.”
Though there is no formal data set on substance use among Koreatown residents, according to KYCC staff, alcohol and marijuana are the top two substances misused, and the prescription drugs Xanax and Adderall are increasingly popular among youth.
“KYCC’s Clinical Unit encounters many individuals with mental illness who also have substance use disorder but treatment programs in Koreatown are few and far between. Today, Recovery Services is here to fill that gap. It is the only state-certified outpatient substance use disorder clinic in Koreatown. And together we now have a full continuum of care in Prevention, Intervention and Maintenance,” said Hiroko Makiyama, Recovery Services Manager.
KYCC has offered mental health counseling to Korean American youth and their families since 1979. In the 1980s, we added alcohol and other drug (AOD) prevention programs, which included marijuana, prescription drug and tobacco education programs. The center will provide help for people facing drug and alcohol programs. Services for youth (ages 12 and up) and adults will include individual, group and family counseling, crisis intervention, case management, recovery support services, information and referral, and drug screening.
