As Spring has come into full bloom, KYCC Environmental Services along with City Plants LA, partnered together to celebrate Arbor Day to help increase urban canopy and beautification in Los Angeles. The Arbor Day Tree Planting Event takes place every year in April, leading up to Earth Day, and is a national holiday created to recognize the importance of trees and climate action.

In hopes of making a greener, more sustainable, and climate resilient Los Angeles, Council District 8, City Plants, LA Sanitation, KYCC, and the Environment Department of Recreation & Parks invited volunteers to join and help reach their goal of planting 200 shade and fruit trees. Over 200 people in Los Angeles participated in the fun and volunteered for this successful event, thanks to a joint effort between community members and our partners!

It was very inspirational to see all of the organizations working together to increase South Los Angeles tree canopy,” says Siray Rodgers, a representative from the Empowerment Congress Central Area Neighborhood Development Council.

Arbor Day, much like Earth Day, is a holiday that celebrates nature. The purpose is to encourage people to plant trees, and many communities traditionally take the opportunity to organize tree-planting and litter-collecting events on or around the holiday.
