On April 4, the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank held their first nutrition and healthy living class for KYCC’s Elementary Tutorial Program (ETP) students. The class, “My Plate,” taught Kindergarten, First and Second Graders how much of each food group should be on their plates.

LAFRB Child and Nutrition Programs Supervisor Dora Chow and Child Nutrition Engagement Coordinator Amirah Dales (with AmeriCorps VISTA) will continue to teach KYCC’s Wilton Center and Menlo Family Center elementary and middle school programs about nutrition, while also providing them with daily snacks, which consist of a meal entrée, vegetables, fruits and milk.

During their first class, after talking about food portions, Dora and Amirah made guacamole with the class.

KYCC Lead Elementary Instructor Heather Jun says that enrichment classes other than arts and crafts are important. “LARFB’s cooking and nutrition classes make our program more diverse in curriculum in addition to offering kids healthier alternatives for snacks”.

LARFB will continue classes through the month of April. Topics will include healthy eating habits and the importance of exercising.
