Trees and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act
KYCC was one of 17 organizations statewide selected to receive American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funding through California ReLeaf. This grant allowed KYCC to retain 2.5 jobs and hire a high-risk youth from the community at a time when funding for tree planting was uncertain.
Over the course of the grant, we planted 580 trees provided through Los Angeles Mayor Villaraigosa's Million Trees Los Angeles (MTLA) initiative.
All of the trees were planted within a mile of the recently-completed Exposition Transit Line, with the goal of mitigating some of the increased from the new stations and parking lots accompanying the Expo line.
In addition to the environmental benefits such as minimizing the urban heat island effect, cleaning the air/reducing pollution, reducing energy consumption and capturing storm water, planting the trees also beautified the neighborhoods.
KYCC was proud to partner with California ReLeaf, Million Trees Los Angeles, and the US Forestry Service in showing how the ARRA funds really made a difference in the communities we serve.
