KYCC Youth Program Interns Explore Civic Engagement at City Hall

On July 29, 2025, KYCC’s Prevention Education team, together with interns from MYPARC and the Environmental Services Summer Youth Program, visited Los Angeles City Hall, where Dianca Vicente, Field Deputy for City Council District 1, graciously led them on a special behind-the-scenes tour.

The youth participants from KYCC Prevention Education and Environmental Services had the unique opportunity to explore the City Council Chamber, enjoy breathtaking views from the observation deck, and engage in a civic engagement presentation that inspired them to recognize their roles in shaping their communities. This field trip was an integral part of the youth program, offering participants firsthand insights into civic processes and motivating them to be active contributors in their communities.

After their enriching experience at City Hall, the group proceeded to the historic El Pueblo de Los Angeles, where they enjoyed a guided tour of Placita Olvera. During this visit, the youth deepened their understanding of the city’s cultural and historical roots, while exploring various museums along the iconic corridor.

KYCC’s MYPARC internship is a ten-month youth leadership program designed to enhance the MacArthur Park Community Initiative through the voices of young people. Throughout this internship, participants gain valuable knowledge in areas such as substance use prevention education, advocacy, and civic engagement. They also completed a culminating Youth Participatory Action Research Project, where they collect over 100 public opinion surveys, conduct hazardous waste environmental scans, and present their findings to various stakeholders.
