When the coronavirus pandemic hit Los Angeles in March 2020, KYCC quickly launched an emergency Hot Meal and Grocery Delivery Program to provide immediate food assistance for residents of KYCC’s affordable housing units as well as many elders abiding by the Safer-At-Home ordinance in the Koreatown and Pico-Union area.<\/p>\n

In response to receiving hundreds of urgent requests asking for support during the COVID-19 crisis, KYCC partnered with\u00a0longstanding government, corporate and community partners, to purchase hot meals from Koreatown neighborhood restaurants and delivered them to low-income families, the elderly and immunocompromised residents of Koreatown. KYCC was able to serve\u00a0120 households from KYCC affordable housing buildings, 146 households from the Koreatown and Pico-Union area, and 200 households or residents from Senior Centers.<\/p>\n

We would like to thank everyone who contributed to our fundraising campaign #KYCC\u2764\ufe0fKTOWN<\/a>\u00a0through donations, outreach, and volunteering. Together, we exceeded our fundraising goal of $50,000, partnered with our local mom-and-pop restaurants to bring them support during the lockdown, and hand-delivered over 12,000 meals and 5,000 grocery bags to limited-income elders and medically compromised individuals in Koreatown.<\/p>\n

For the past several months, staff and volunteers worked hard to pick up meals and groceries, assemble delivery bags, and drive to each home to make hand deliveries every week from Tuesday to Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause I am asthmatic and my husband is diabetic with high blood pressure, it was hard for us to go to the market to feed our family of four. COVID-19 made it difficult to access food, essentials and groceries, so we are thankful for all of the pandemic assistance that KYCC provides for the community and we appreciate everyone who was involved,\u201d says Meal Delivery recipient Aida Flores.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the beginning of the lockdown, it was really hard because I had to go to the grocery store with all my kids and stand in long lines. The KYCC meal delivery program was amazing because we were able to limit how much we went outside. Thank you to the volunteers for all your efforts to deliver groceries to our doorstep,\u201d says Meal Delivery recipient David Yanez.<\/p>\n

Although we are pausing on our hot meal program, as most of our meal recipients have been signed up for city and state-sponsored meal delivery programs, KYCC is still delivering groceries and essentials weekly to several hundred individuals, children and families who reside in our affordable housing buildings.<\/p>\n
