KYCC Rehabilitation Service Manager Hiroko Makiyama said, \u201cThe medication-assisted treatment, which has been proven effective through a variety of verifications, is a good model for healing a person through the combination of prescription and counseling of auxiliary drugs. We will safely treat patients with disabilities and help them return to their daily lives.\u201d<\/p>\n
Medication-assisted treatment is a method of treating drug addiction by assisting\/using drugs. Under medication-assisted treatment, counseling and various complementary methods are combined with medication. Patients are assisted through drug prescriptions approved by the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and provided counseling and cognitive behavioral therapy to help them escape drug addiction and dependence.<\/p>\n
Medication-assisted treatment is not only applied to opioids, but also to other drug or alcohol addiction treatments. As drug and alcohol addiction patients have increased, interest in medication-assisted treatment has also increased, and medical institutions that provide actual drug-assisted treatment are also becoming more prominent.<\/p>\n
Prescribing these drugs requires either obtaining a federal permit or completing a federally established course for each drug. Medication-assisted treatment is supplemented by counseling, cognitive and behavioral treatments to help recover from drug addiction and reduce the risk of addiction relapse.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThe drugs prescribed by MAT include buprenorphine, methadone, and naltrexone, which have the effect of minimizing withdrawal symptoms and alleviating side effects, such as nausea, from the process of discontinuing opioids and alcohol,\u201d said Eric Schluderberg, KHEIR Clinic Specialist. “These drugs work to normalize brain hormones, block the rewarding effects obtained through opioids and alcohol, suppress the desire to use drugs, and normalize body functions.”<\/p>\n
Opioid addiction and abuse is a serious health crisis in our community. According to the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) under the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as of 2017, there have been nearly 70,000 deaths from drug overdoses in the United States, of which close to 48,000 were from opioid overdoses.<\/p>\n
With opioid addiction and abuse becoming more and more serious, medication-assisted treatment (MAT), which is a medical alternative treatment that helps to escape the pain caused by drug or opioid use disorder (SUD, OUD), has been gaining more attention.<\/p>\n
KHEIR Clinic will provide medication-assisted treatment to Medi-Cal patients, and KYCC provides free recovery services to Medi-Cal patients and MyHealth LA members.
