On July 2, 2021, our Prevention Education team partnered with 13 restaurants and bars to launch the Table Top Campaign (TTC) for the Fourth of July holiday. CoPALM’s Table Top Campaign disseminated approximately 600 coasters with anti-drunk driving messaging in both English and Spanish. The educational materials have prevention messaging about drunk driving and is intended to remind patrons to drink responsibly during the holiday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Table Top Campaign is a project of KYCC’s Prevention Education Unit, first launched in Spring 2019 under The Coalition for Prevention and Awareness in LA Metro (CoPALM)<\/a>. TTC aims to educate the public on the negative consequences of drunk driving and focuses its efforts in Los Angeles city. Alcohol reduces the function of the brain, impairing thinking, reasoning and muscle coordination. All these abilities are essential to operating a vehicle safely. Because of this risk, it\u2019s illegal in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico to drive with\u00a0a BAC of .08 or higher, except in Utah\u00a0where the BAC limit is .05.<\/p>\n

However, even a small amount of alcohol can affect driving ability. In 2019, there were 1,775\u00a0people killed in alcohol-related crashes where a driver\u00a0had a\u00a0BAC\u00a0of .01 to .07 g\/dL.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

CoPALM<\/a>\u00a0is a coalition launched by a group of concerned community leaders and stakeholders, with the support of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health<\/a>, to address the impact of alcohol, marijuana, and other drugs on communities and devise strategies to protect youth from alcohol, marijuana, and other drug abuse.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Since 2019, the CoPALM has partnered with 47 businesses throughout Los Angeles County Service Planning Area 4 (SPA-4) and disseminated approximately 4,600 materials, such as table tents, coasters, and poster displays that contain prevention messaging about drunk driving. For the past 2 years, the coalition has been working hard to launch more campaigns during major drinking holidays like Cinco de Mayo and most recently, July 4. As a result, this project has grown quickly in partnerships with local businesses.<\/p>\n
