Education Organizes National Prescription Drug Takeback Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On April 27, 2024 KYCC Prevention Education\u2019s Coalition for Prevention and Awareness in LA (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.copalm.org\/\">CoPALM<\/a>), collaborated with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chla.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children\u2019s Hospital of Los Angeles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhs-inc.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Behavioral Health Services<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/takebackday\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Prescription Drug Takeback Day<\/span><\/a>\u00a0hosted at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lapdonline.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LAPD Olympic Police Station<\/span><\/a>, where they were able to engage with 18 community members and collect over 28 pounds of expired and unused medication<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1928\" height=\"2560\" class=\"alignnone size-full href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/takebackday\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Drug Enforcement Agency\u2019s (DEA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> National Prescription Drug Takeback Day first began on September 25, 2010, to reflect on the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> DEA\u2019s commitment to Americans\u2019 safety and health, encouraging the public to remove unneeded medications from their homes as a measure of preventing medication misuse and opioid addiction from ever starting.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ever since, the day has become an annual event that happens twice per year, in April and October.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Prescription Drug Takeback Day is a day for individuals in the community to drop off their expired or unused medications<\/span><b>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The purpose of the event is to promote safe disposal of medications for the safety of others and the community by preventing drug abuse, misuse, and overdose.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1928\" height=\"2560\" class=\"alignnone size-full style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parents in the community expressed that proper disposal of medications was something they weren&#8217;t quite familiar with. They also mentioned having knowledge of the existing drop off locations in the community was good information to have on hand.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI&#8217;ve been mostly reflecting on the outreach we did vs the turn out. As a whole, the DEA&#8217;s National Takeback Day(s) is not something that is recognized outside of our field. It makes you question the &#8220;national&#8221; aspect but also highlights the need for these initiatives to be publicized year round maybe.
