On Friday May 2, 2025 <\/span>KYCC Prevention Education hosted its 9th Annual Flores de Mayo event at the Garden Suite Hotel in Koreatown. Since 2017, Flores de Mayo has been celebrated annually to promote an alcohol-free environment, challenging the cultural tradition that parties and gatherings can only be enjoyed with alcoholic beverages. This event also celebrates and recognizes parents for their participation in KYCC\u2019s programs and their contributions to substance prevention education efforts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This event not only highlights the importance of substance use prevention education but also honors the invaluable contributions of our community members. This year\u2019s theme, \u201cWe Are Flowers of Resilience: We Persist, We Heal, We Bloom,\u201d speaks to the power of unity in the face of adversity. Despite the hardships our community has faced this year, they continued to show up, with strength, hope, and a commitment to healing and growth. Together, alongside KYCC\u2019s Prevention Education programs, our community has persisted, supported one another, and continued to bloom.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The <\/span>Prevention Community Council (PCC)<\/span> parent groups currently engage over 150 community members, who benefit from KYCC services, Prevention Education programs, and weekly resources shared by the PCC Leadership Team. The members recognized during this event have demonstrated active participation in a variety of initiatives, including the <\/span>Botvin LifeSkills for Adults<\/span><\/i> curriculum, <\/span>Evento de Arte: Red Ribbon Week<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>El Mercadito Magico<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Salud y Bienestar Prevention Summit<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Train the Trainer<\/span><\/i>, the <\/span>Changing Communities Series<\/span><\/i>, and many collaborative efforts with other KYCC programs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Many of our PCC members are mothers and grandmothers whose dedication to community engagement has been truly inspiring. As part of this celebration, we also took a moment to honor and express our deep appreciation for their role in shaping and uplifting our communities\u2014not just as leaders, but as caregivers and role models.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFrom my experience, they make us feel important\u2014like big celebrities who are there to receive a recognition signed by council members for our work in the community, and certificates from an organization that welcomed me with a smile and where I feel comfortable participating, which is KYCC,\u201d says a PCC Member.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
