In late\u00a0August, during their first week in the after-school program, students wrote a compare-and-contrast\u00a0paper based on the documentary <em>Back to School<\/em>, where two children from different countries\u00a0experience their first day of school.<\/p>\n<p>MASP serves low-income, at-risk youth in the Pico-Union neighborhood of Los Angeles. Located\u00a0in KYCC\u2019s Menlo Family Center, MASP focuses and ensures academic, social, and emotional\u00a0growth.\u00a0Students have enrichment activities twice a week to help them build self esteem, self\u00a0confidence and strong social skills.<\/p>\n<p>Our third- to fifth-grade elementary school students showed a great deal of interest in learning\u00a0about the struggles that students from other countries have to endure to acquire an\u00a0education.\u00a0\u201cIn other countries kids have to pay for school, books, and their lunch,\u201d Shawn, a fourth grader, stated, when discussing the lives of two students whose lives were less\u00a0fortunate. \u201cI\u2019m lucky that I don\u2019t have to pay for either.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After learning about a young girl whose life was in danger from a religious group against females\u00a0pursuing education, Genesis shared, \u201cI feel bad that she and the rest of her classmates have to\u00a0fear for their life for going to school.\u00a0I\u2019m a female and I wouldn\u2019t want to feel scared every time I\u00a0go to school.\u201d\u00a0By hearing the students\u2019 reactions, MASP staff was very pleased that students\u00a0seemed more appreciative about their life, being able to school and obtaining an education.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After a long fun summer, KYCC\u2019s Menlo After School Program (MASP) students were ready to\u00a0start the new school year.
