On Jan. 21, YDAPP<\/a> held a press conference in Koreatown to report survey findings and announce their\u00a0#WEEDecide pledge and social media campaign, which encourages youth to live a marijuana-free lifestyle.<\/p>\n

Gilbert Mora, Prevention Coordinator from Behavioral Health Services, and Dikran Melkonian, Senior Lead Officer from the LAPD-Olympic Division, joined three YDAPP youth\u2014Paul Kim,\u00a0Esther Yu and Robert Camacho\u2014to discuss the growing trends and negative effects of\u00a0marijuana on the community.\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019re making sure we have a spotlight to cure this problem and pay attention to our youth,\u201d\u00a0Mora said.<\/p>\n

In their 2012 survey of Koreatown, Pico-Union and Westlake youth, 26% reported that they\u00a0have used marijuana\u2014four times the national average. \u201cI want to start the conversation on\u00a0marijuana with my peers so we can all work towards a more balanced lifestyle,\u201d says\u00a0Paul Kim, age 17, from Pacific Palisades High School, and co-President of YDAPP.<\/p>\n

With the discussion of marijuana legalization in California, rapid openings of new\u00a0dispensaries in Los Angeles, and the increase in marijuana use by youth, KYCC\u2019s\u00a0YDAPP members hope to encourage youth in their community to change social norms\u00a0that influence engagement in illicit drugs. Through multiple social media channels\u00a0(Instagram<\/a>, Twitter<\/a>, YouTube<\/a>, and Facebook<\/a>), YDAPP is seeking to build dialogue with\u00a0their peers on youth marijuana use.<\/p>\n

Since 1996, YDAPP has raised awareness on the risks of substance abuse to Koreatown\u00a0youth through creative projects, surveys and education on tobacco and alcohol trends.\u00a0KYCC is working in conjunction with the Los Angeles County Department of Public\u00a0Health, Substance Abuse Prevention and Control Division, in addressing underage druguse.<\/p>\n
