On June 28, 2019, Jung and Michelle Lee of Topper Liquor (3061 W 8th St, Los Angeles, CA), received a recognition award from Koreatown Youth and Community Center as part of KYCC’s Prevention Education’s<\/a> Responsible Retailer Campaign. Liquor store owners that are a part of Prevention Education’s Responsible Retailer campaign are awarded for their efforts in reducing underage drinking and their commitment to improving public health and safety.<\/p>\n

Youth Drug Abuse Prevention Program (YDAPP) student America Montes and four KYCC Prevention Education (PE) staff recognized Topper Liquor Store for their participation in Responsible Retailer projects.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Responsible Retailer Program began in 2014 by KYCC\u2019s Environmental Prevention Services (EPS) team, which is under the umbrella services of KYCC’s Prevention Education. Funded by the LA County Department of Public Health<\/a> Substance Abuse Prevention and Control, the Responsible Retailer campaign seeks to reduce underage drinking by partnering with local liquor store owners and raising awareness about the risks of sales to underage persons.<\/p>\n

In the past five years, Prevention Education has made a concerted effort to involve more community members in their outreach to local alcoholic beverage establishments and currently works with over 100 liquor stores in Koreatown, Westlake and Pico-Union.<\/p>\n

The Sticker Shock Campaign seeks to inform, educate and remind our community of the implications of selling and providing alcohol to underage youth. The Sticker Shock Campaign is a youth-driven project and involves YDAPP, Advancing Youth Through Community Engagement (AYCE) students and PE staff.<\/p>\n

Teens place stickers on alcoholic beverages in various liquor stores to raise public awareness and spread a clear message to young adults who might be purchasing alcohol for minors. The stickers read \u201cDid you know? Purchasing or providing alcohol to anyone under the age of 21 is a serious crime.\u201d Through the ongoing effort of parents, public health agencies, law enforcement, retail establishments and teens, KYCC hopes to reduce the potential of alcohol-related harms and keep communities safe.<\/p>\n
