The Vernon event was the official kickoff for the planting of 90,000 trees that the City of Los Angeles pledged to plant as part of the City\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/plan.lamayor.org\/\">Green New Deal<\/a>. The Green New Deal was put into effect this past April, with goals to make Los Angeles a more sustainable city for its residents, employees and visitors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fight of our lives is climate change,\u00bb said Mayor Garcetti. \u00abThe best way to combat climate change\u2014because this is a fight that we must win, we must stop the warming of our planet and we must protect our communities\u2014is by planting a tree. It cools the earth. It provides oxygen. Councilmember Marqueece Harris-Dawson (<a href=\"https:\/\/mhdcd8.com\/\">CD 8<\/a>), who also spoke at the event, added: \u00abAll of us can plant a tree. And if we can\u2019t plant a tree, we can make a phone call to the city and ask them to come plant a tree in a place we have by our house. We have to make sure we do our fair share to leave generations to come at least what we got.\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>The Mayor later spoke of the budget increase to restore L.A.\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/streetsla.lacity.org\/urban-forestry-division\">Urban Forestry Division<\/a> to pre-recession levels and the boost in green jobs, such as for arborists, tree surgeons, and maintenance crews.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"793\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-17873\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kyccla.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Vernon.ES_.CBasurto2-1024x793.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kyccla.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Vernon.ES_.CBasurto2-1024x793.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.kyccla.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Vernon.ES_.CBasurto2-300x232.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.kyccla.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Vernon.ES_.CBasurto2-150x116.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.kyccla.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Vernon.ES_.CBasurto2-768x594.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.kyccla.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Vernon.ES_.CBasurto2-1536x1189.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.kyccla.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Vernon.ES_.CBasurto2-2048x1585.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cKYCC has been working for over 10 years to bring more street trees to South L.A.,\u201d said KYCC Environmental Services Manager Clarissa Boyajian. \u201cTrees clean our air, provide welcome shade and improve both mental and physical health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>KYCC has been a planting partner in Central and South L.A. for many years, and we\u2019re excited to continue increasing tree canopy in the parts of our city that need it the most.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the event, KYCC planted 15 street trees to beautify this South Los Angeles community in collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/mhdcd8.com\/\">Los Angeles Council District 8<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/empowerla.org\/eccandc\/\">Empowerment Congress Central Area<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/obamaprepacademy-lausd-ca.schoolloop.com\/\">Barack Obama Global Preparation Academy<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/lacostentorians.org\/\">L.A. She also spoke of the City&#8217;s goals within the Green New Deal to increase the canopy by at least 50 percent by 2028 in communities with the least shade. The City&#8217;s hottest neighborhoods tend to be the most economically disadvantaged.<\/p>\n<p>Malaraich was the KYCC Environmental Services Manager prior to accepting her new post within the Board of Public Works.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since 1995, KYCC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kyccla.org\/services\/environmental-services\/\">Environmental Services<\/a> has been working to create safe, healthy and beautiful neighborhoods.
