<\/p>\nFor Black History Month, the TK-2nd graders in our Wilton Afterschool program read the book \u00abWho Are Your People?\u00bb, an inspiring picture book celebrating the family and community that helps make us who we are. Written by the bestselling author Bakari Sellers, the book ends with the question, \u00abSo what will you dream and how will you change the world?\u00bb. Each of our students and volunteers answered this question and wrote their responses down. One wrote, \u00abImprove the foster care system\u00bb and another wrote, \u00abMy dream is for all people to be nice.\u00bb Litzy wrote, \u00abMy dream is to change the world.\u00bb<\/p>\n

Elementary Program Lead, Xochitl Vazquez, in our Menlo elementary program, led an activity on Ruby Bridges, the African-American child to desegregate an all-white school in Louisiana. Students watched a video about how Ruby Bridges became one of the first black children to integrate New Orleans’ all white public school system at only six years old.<\/p>\n

KYCC’s afterschool programs at both our Wilton and Menlo sites, help K-5th grade students excel in their academic work and engage in enriching extracurricular activities. Our students are also taught a variety of different topics in a culturally sensitive way, that broadens their perspectives and encourages diversity, and helps foster a higher respect for people of all different backgrounds.\u00a0<\/p>\n
