The Treehouse

The Treehouse is located at 680 S. Wilton Place, 2nd floor and operates Mondays – Fridays from 3:30-7:30pm.  The Treehouse is KYCC’s umbrella program for all Youth Development services.  The Treehouse serves as a daily drop-in center that focuses in all areas of individual life skills development: leadership training, teambuilding strategies, effective communication styles, career exploration, entrepreneurial training, academic assistance, college preparatory courses, enrichment activities, community involvement and gender-specific programming that address at-risk youth.  The programs are divided into four modules:  Body & Health, Mind & Education, Community Involvement & Environmental Issues, and Cultural Differences & Family Traditions.

Under The Treehouse are the following programs:

  • Tutoring Education and Mentoring (TEAM) trains teens to tutor children between the ages of 5-13 years old.
  • SEEK LA is a collaborative effort between KYCC, UCLA, Educare, and LA High. SEEK-LA is one of 60 grantees funded through the 21st Century Community Learning grants under the No Child Left Behind mandate. SEEK-LA programs are provided as an after-school program at the Drop-In Center located on LA High's school campus. The program offers tutoring, homework assistance, college prep, job employment training, leadership development, computer access, and various enrichment activities.
  • California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) the CAHSEE Preparation Course is designed to help students prepare for and pass the exit exam. Currently, we offer an English CAHSEE prep, and a Math CAHSEE prep class.
  • Youth Drug & Alcohol Prevention Program (YDAPP) provides extensive training for youth to educate peers and to raise awareness about the effects of drugs and alcohol.  YDAPP conducts quarterly community compliance checks on retailers (liquor stores).
  • The Youth Skills Program (YSP), a delinquency prevention/intervention program serving youth who are on probation and court mandated.  All YSP youth are responsible to complete a series of individual life skills development sessions, along with community service hours.  Finally, all participants prepare a seven-minute Presentation of Learning (POL) focused on their conduct, demeanor, effective communication styles and organizational skills before completing the program.
  • Youth Venture is a program that provides extensive training to a group of youth to raise awareness and to educate the community about HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.

New programs:

  • Youth Leadership Council meets every Wednesday to discuss workshop topics and upcoming community events.
  • Gender-specific programs take place the 1st & 3rd Fridays of every month from 6-7:30pm.  If you are interested in becoming a volunteer tutor or mentor, please contact Betty Fong for more information.
